162…Looking forward to the new year

by frances doherty on January 9, 2017

2016 finished for me in a flurry of orders for a new gallery in Bath. Winter is not necessarily the time when I sell a lot of work so this was very welcome and I enjoyed making a whole series of new wallpieces.

Poppies are a perennial favourite and the trick is always finding a new way to represent them as they can be done to death. I usually concentrate on the Poppy centre which is always striking. Another work which has proved popular has been one inspired by a Zinnia,

I like gradiating the colour out from the centre.

All this new work was driven down to Bath a couple of days before Christmas

and laid out ready to organise into groups. By the time I’d got home a couple of these had walked out of the gallery which made me very happy.

Another artist who is showing with me in Bath is Jane Corbett,

I think our work really compliments each other. I love the detail in her work and the way she uses different media. I always find it really inspiring. I believe she is also a milliner. I can certainly see how she has transferred her skills here.

The last of my sketches have gone now too

so I’m starting to compile a long list to get started on once I get back into my studio. I am having January off to get on with some much needed DIY, so I will be raring to go when I get back to France.

As a treat at Christmas a group of us went up the i360 in Brighton. This is a new venture and the first of it’s kind. Apparently you can see for 26 miles on a clear day.

It’s fascinating to see your home town from so high in the air, and this red building really shone out. Not sure but think it must be the Lion and Lobster? Anyone know?
